Why the Porsche 996 Is Still a Great Performance Platform
Introduced in 1997, the 996 represented one of the biggest changes in the history of the Porsche 911. It became the first production 911 generation to use a water-cooled flat-six engine, beginning a new era for Porsche performance.
Today, the 996 has developed a strong following among enthusiasts. It still delivers the analog driving experience people want from an older 911 while offering a platform that can benefit from carefully selected modern performance upgrades.
However, the best modification path depends heavily on which 996 you own. A naturally aspirated Carrera and a twin-turbo 996 Turbo have very different performance potential, so we build each car around the owner’s goals rather than treating every 996 the same.

Porsche 996 Turbo Tuning
The 996 Turbo is where this generation becomes especially interesting from a tuning perspective.
Its factory twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter flat-six produced 420 PS when introduced. Porsche also equipped the 996 Turbo with all-wheel drive, helping put that power to the ground.
Because the engine is already turbocharged, there are several areas that can be addressed when building a higher-performance 996 Turbo.
